That's an excellent question. I'd like to know the same exact thing.

Experienced boxers who like to work with beginners, what kind of gear/attitude/personality/etc. do you like in the more inexperienced guys you train/spar with? What resources would you recommend to a complete rookie to prep for a "first bout?"

An attitude eager to learn and willing to push yourself.

Best way to learn is to do it as much as you can. Preferably regular lessons from a professional instructor.

It’s not about just learning to throw a punch, it’s about conditioning yourself and practicing hundreds or thousands of times. There is only so much you can do talking or typing about it. It’s all about building experience.

Thanks, appreciate that. I finally gave up on gym re opening in WA pandemic and I now have a trainer who holds mitts and coaches/trains me. Its a helpful 1:1 set up, but just 3 hours a week. Otherwise Im focusing on core and endurance. My objective is actually to absorb as many punches as I can and mount a decent defense. Thats what I'm after. Next step is some medicine ball ab work 👍

Gear: just rock up with what you've got. If you have vinyl gloves, I'd tell you to get rid of them, because they soon split. I'd lend you gear for the first few sessions, and refer you to online catalogues where you can find the good stuff.
Attitude: be realistic and patient. Tell me what you've done before in terms of other forms of training. Don't expect to be sparring straight away unless you have appropriate experience in other stand-up fight formats, e.g. kickboxing. Even then, there are adjustments to stance, guard, etc. we'll have to make beforehand. As a complete beginner to any form of stand-up fighting, expect to go through several training sessions to get the basics in form, technique and build up cardio levels to get to the level required for even the most limited, controlled forms of sparring.
Personality: all personality types can be found in a boxing class. The ones who keep coming, however, have a quality of determination, courage and passion about them that I can only admire.
