Boston Crab And Variant

How do you breathe under the hold?

I agree by keeping an arm underneath you. It can help. I really like taking a crab. I've rarely had breathing problems but I understand why you can if it's an intense crab - I think it's the pressure on the diaphragm. Also, I think if you get a guy who puts it on really quickly (which isn't recommended) it can take you by surprise.

Guys, just wondering how do you breathe while on a boston crab? Like are you supposted to hold your breath? I only had 3 matches and my cardio isnt very good, I really love boston crabs but I have to submit in seconds because I cant breathe and not because of the pain. I’ve seen people taking this hold for a little more than 1 minute. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it seems impossible to me to breathe while on a boston crab.

I agree with Dave. If the guy sits in the saddle and does not put too much weight on breathing works fine. If however he puts a lot of weight on or sits high up on your ribs it’s much harder !!

I speak from years of personal fun with the hold. I’ve been in it for many minutes and been able to breath fine. So you need someone who is skilled to apply it.

Take care

Well I guess It's my fault then, I requested a fully seated boston crab. But I guess that's what makes it harder to breathe. Does sitting a little way up, in the upper back make breathing easier? Are you supposed to be squatting when giving someone the boston crab? That sounds a little hard for the guy on top too no?

I had personally requested a rough and fully seated boston crab. So I guess I got what I asked for. He is very experient in wrestling, I doubt it was lack of experience, It likely was more due to my horrible cardio too. But thanks for the answers.

It is not easy to breathe in this hold, if they put full pressure on your back it can be almost impossible to breathe. As you say, that is part of the fun of the hold!

One trick that can help to take the hold is to keep one arm underneath you when you are turned over. This gives you a little more space to breathe which can make all the difference.

Hi, thanks a lot for the reply. I heard about the arm underneath technique before. Will try it.

But then if it's a full weight boston crab you're not supposed to breathe very well then, right? I agree that fully seated variant is the funiest, I'll try that technique. Thanks for the advice.

Maybe the guy who’s sitting on you is really big and inexperienced, putting too much pressure on your back, far too quickly. The guy sitting should increase the bend on your back really slowly and be standing astride you with his knees bent. Many pics on site.
